Perceptions of Black Children's Narrative Language: A Mixed-Methods Study

Purpose In this mixed-methods study, we address two aims. First, examine the impact of language variation on ratings children's narrative language. Second, identify participants' ideologies related to and variation. Method Forty adults listened rated six Black second-grade children quality 12 narratives (six fictional, personal). Adults then completed a quantitative survey participated in qualitative interview. Results Findings indicated that students with less from mainstream American English (MAE) more highly than greater MAE for fictional narratives, but not personal narratives. Personal tended be evaluated favorably by parents teachers. raters assign higher did White raters. Thematic analysis conversation interviews supported findings provided pertinent information about beliefs. Conclusion Taken together, results point shared ideology among adult being acceptable informal contexts, such as telling story experience, formal narrating prompted picture sequence.
